The model at a glance
| Use case | Cost | How it's granted |
| Exploration, evaluation, development — self-managed, non-commercial | Free | Source-available non-commercial license (self-managed). A free managed tier is also planned, quota-bounded to evaluation. |
| Production or commercial use (managed or self-managed) | Subscription + metered billing | Managed: a paid subscription tier. Self-managed: a commercial license from Enscrive. |
| Enterprise | Custom | Negotiated agreement — may include commercial self-managed rights, volume terms, and dedicated tenancy. |
What's free
The download-and-run path stays frictionless. The boundary is the license, not a
technical lock. You may, at no cost:
- Install and run the Enscrive CLI and self-managed stack.
- Use Enscrive as your neural backend to learn, prototype, and evaluate.
- Develop against the full workflow — ingest, search, voice tuning, eval runs — for non-commercial purposes.
What requires a subscription or commercial license
Any production or commercial use is outside the free grant. That includes:
- Serving end users or running a production workload.
- Generating revenue or using Enscrive in a commercial product or service.
- Any commercial workload — whether on the managed platform or self-managed.
For production on the managed platform, that's a subscription with metered billing. For
self-managed commercial use, that's a commercial license. Enterprise agreements may grant
broader self-managed rights.
License instrument
The self-managed Enscrive CLI and stack are distributed under a source-available,
non-commercial license — PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 —
paired with separate Enscrive Commercial License / subscription terms for production and
commercial use, and an enterprise carve-out. This is source-available, not a permissive
open-source license: it permits free non-commercial development and evaluation, and reserves
production and commercial use for paying subscribers or commercial licensees.
The exact LICENSE file ships with each self-managed distribution and governs in
the event of any conflict with this summary. This page describes the intent; the license
text is the legal instrument.
How the boundary is honored
- Managed platform: the free tier (when launched) is quota-bounded to evaluation; production-grade usage requires a subscription tier with exact, metered billing.
- Self-managed (CLI /
enscrive-deploy): the license terms govern. Free use is bounded to non-commercial development and evaluation; production or commercial use requires a commercial license. This is an honor-system + license-terms model, standard for source-available infrastructure.
The managed platform at api.enscrive.io is pre-launch. This page describes the
licensing model that governs the self-managed distribution today and the managed platform
at launch; it is not a representation that a managed production service is generally
available yet.
